Detty December is the festive season in Nigeria and Ghana, from mid-December to early January, packed with concerts, beach parties, weddings and diaspora homecomings. 'Detty' is West African Pidgin for 'dirty': partying hard and without restraint through the holidays.
What does “detty” mean?
“Detty” is how “dirty” sounds in Nigerian and Ghanaian Pidgin. It doesn’t mean unclean. It means celebrating with no brakes: late nights, back-to-back events and spending you’ll think about in January. That’s why people search both “detty December” and “dirty December”. It’s the same thing.
Why is Detty December so popular?
- The homecoming. Millions of Nigerians and Ghanaians abroad (the “IJGBs”, or I Just Got Backs) fly home for Christmas, weddings and family.

Who started Detty December?
Nobody owns the origin story. December partying in Nigeria and Ghana is decades old. The phrase itself is widely credited to Mr Eazi, who used it for his December shows around 2016 and later launched the Detty Rave. Ghana’s government-backed Year of Return (2019) then turned Accra into a diaspora destination. Ownership of the phrase has since been contested, with competing trademark claims reported in Nigeria.
