The Detty December health checklist

  1. Yellow fever vaccination: Ghana checks every arriving traveller. In Lagos, checks mostly apply to travellers from other African countries, but vaccination is still recommended. Carry your certificate.
  2. Travel clinic visit: 6 to 8 weeks before travel, for malaria prevention and routine vaccines.
  3. Travel insurance that covers medical treatment and evacuation.
  4. Insect repellent for evenings and nights.
  5. Rehydration sachets and a refillable bottle.
  6. Sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses.
  7. Any prescription medicines in original packaging, with a copy of the prescription.

This is general information, not medical advice. Speak to a travel health professional before your trip.

Malaria: what to know

Malaria is present in both Ghana and Nigeria. Prevention is simple:

  • Take preventive medication if advised by your clinic.
  • Use repellent from dusk, when mosquitoes bite most.
  • Sleep in air-conditioned rooms or under nets.
  • Wear long sleeves in the evening where practical.
  • See a doctor quickly if you develop a fever during or after your trip, and mention your travel.

Beating the heat

December in Lagos and Accra is hot and humid, often above 30°C. Heat plus late nights plus alcohol is the classic Detty December crash.

  1. Drink water all day, not just when you're thirsty.
  2. Alternate drinks with water on nights out.
  3. Plan outdoor sightseeing for the morning.
  4. Use rehydration salts after big nights.
  5. Rest in the afternoon before big events.

Food and water safety

  • Drink bottled or sealed water.
  • Choose busy food spots with fresh, hot food.
  • Be careful with salads and ice at street stalls if you have a sensitive stomach.
  • Bring stomach remedies just in case.

Pharmacies and medical care

  • Pharmacies are common in both cities and stock most basics. Check medicines are genuine by using established pharmacies.
  • Private hospitals and clinics in Lagos and Accra serve most visitors. Your insurer can recommend one.
  • Save emergency numbers: 112 in both Nigeria and Ghana, and 767 in Lagos.
